The institute looks back at a long history. It was founded in 1962 by Bruno Kreisky and prominent politicians of the "Third World", as a think tank for global development issues. With the establishment of kulturen in bewegung and fairplay, two initiatives were founded at the Institute in the 1990s to introduce further important aspects of a dialogue at a 'level playing field'.

The three departments of the VIDC - Global Dialogue, kulturen in bewegung and fairplay - are dedicated to promoting a critical public. A dialogue at a 'level playing field' conducted with international partners aims to promote critical discourse, initiate cultural cooperation and support diversity and anti-discrimination measures in sport.

As an active part of civil society, VIDC cooperates with many partners inside and outside Austria. But we also want to support, mobilise and offer initiatives a platform for networking. Our manifold contacts should help us to reflect global developments from a non-European perspective and to bring them into the public debate.
