Africa Club March 2025
The Africa Club is an informal discussion forum for people interested in African issues. Participants come from public institutions, the African diaspora, civil society, academia and the media. Topics are current developments in Africa, EU-Africa relations and the situation of the African diaspora in Europe and Austria. The goals are the exchange of information - with different backgrounds and perspectives - and the building of knowledge networks. This round of the Africa Club took place in English and under the Chatham House Rule on the 11th of March 2025 at the Centre for International Development (C3) in Vienna. It was moderated by Gracia Ndona, a journalist and co-founder of ADOE (African Diaspora in Austria).
In Europe, the newly elected European Commission and Parliament have prioritized security and competitiveness. A central element of its strategy toward the Global South is the Global Gateway initiative - a global investment plan designed to mobilize the private sector. First introduced at the AU-EU Summit in 2022, the Global Gateway has gained renewed attention under the new EU leadership. In particular, the EU's focus on strengthening its economy and supply chains, aiming to diversify sources of raw materials and open new export markets, has raised critical questions for Africa-EU relations. The discussion centred around two main segments, each featuring three distinguished speakers who provided diverse perspectives on Africa-Europe relations. The first round focused on a critical analysis of AU-EU relations, examining key dynamics and challenges. The second round explored the way forward, identifying potential strategies for strengthening collaboration between the two regions. Following each round of presentations, a roundtable discussion was held, enabling an interactive exchange between the panelists and the audience.
